In 1920, Ernest M. Skinner (one of the United States' greatest organbuilders) was given "carte blanche" to design the organ at the Congregational Church in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The organ today remains unaltered and faithfully restored by Messrs. Czelusniak et Dugal, Inc. Peter Stoltzfus uses the organ to great effect showing the entire color palette of 26 manual foundation flues and 18 manual reed stops in Bruckner's Adagio from the 7th Symphony, the organ's lighthearted side in Boëllmann's Ronde Française, the atmospheric nature of the organ in Sowerby's Meditations on Communion Hymns, the poetry of the foundations in Franck's Prière, and the sheer power and mass of this Skinner Organ, including the full-length wooden 32' Bombarde, in the rhythmically driven Gershwin Piano Preludes and Sowerby's grand processional on Sine Nomine.

The story of Holyoke, the industrial marvel of the mid-nineteenth century, begins in the small church-centered farming community at the turn of the 18th century. It wasn’t until the mid-1840s, about the time the Connecticut River Railroad was built through Ireland Parish, that the little village on the rapids began to attract the attention of outsiders. In 1848, Holyoke, with its proposed configuration of dams, canals, and mills, became the first planned industrial city in the United States. Laborers, earning eighty-five cents a day, built three dams across the rapids and excavated nearly five miles of canals.

MOUNTAIN PARK FLYER roller coaster - Holyoke, MA

Mountain Park was a quaint traditional amusement park located off Interstate 91 in Holyoke, MA just north of Chicopee & Springfield. The park had a great wooden roller coaster originally called the Mountain Wildcat when it opened in 1929, and later renamed the Mountain Flyer. The park closed in 1987 but remnants of the park still remain. On-ride footage Copyrighted 2006 Bill Kern, Ricky Summersett, Gone But Not Forgotten.
